Melvin Ethelyn Daugherty, 93, of Yorktown, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at American Village in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Melvin was born August 21, 1923 in Cuzco, Indiana to the late Harold and Alma (Clements) Collins. She graduated from Cuzco High School and went on to earn her degree in nursing from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She was a nurse for Dr. Clauser. She worked at Ball Memorial hospital for many years and later retired in 1983. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and spending time with her family.
Melvin is survived by her three children, Charles Daugherty of Muncie, David Daugherty (wife Vicki) of Indianapolis, and Mary Beth Mahan of Avilla, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Jacob Mahan, Aaron Mahan, Adrienne Shonk (husband Chris), Steven Copenhaver, and Lauren Copenhaver; two great-grandchildren, Sagan Tesla Kinetic and Owsley Jack Faust; four siblings, Rose Sikes, Virginia Flick, Robert Collins, and Loretta Drake; and several nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Howard Daugherty; three brothers, Leonard Collins, Elbert Collins, and Adrian Collins; and four sisters, Mavis Juarez, Lorena Addis, Jacqueline Rea, and Joann McCarty.
A funeral service to celebrate Melvin's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S Broadway St. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Farmland.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 8, 2017 and one hour prior to the service on Friday at Gant Funeral Homes, Yorktown Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be given to The Alzheimer's Association, 8180 Greensboro Drive, Suite 400 McLean, VA 22102.
