Shirley Jean Hughes, 70, of Muncie, passed away on Thursday morning, January 27, 2022, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Shirley was born on December 5, 1951, to the late Curtis and Rosie Ann (Logan) Bryant. She was a 1970 graduate of Muncie Central High School and attended Yorktown High School through the 11th grade. Shirley married Stephen Hughes on November 14, 1970. She worked as a custodian for Yorktown Schools for over 20 years. Shirley enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking and sewing. She cherished family gatherings, holidays, and time spent with her beloved granddaughter, Abigail.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Stephen T. Hughes; two children, Stephen L. Hughes and Brandee Hughes Cloud (fiancée Mark P.); granddaughter, Abigail Cloud; sister, Margaret Ditzenberger; brother-in-law, Robert Hughes; three nieces, Angie Hart (husband Michael), Gina Crider (husband Michael), and Nichole Hughes; and a nephew, Matthew Hughes.

A funeral service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Gant Funeral Homes – Yorktown Chapel, 2215 S. Broadway St. in Yorktown. Burial will follow in Hawk Cemetery.

Friends and family may gather to share and remember from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, January 31, 2022, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at Gant Funeral Homes – Yorktown Chapel.
